Excellent, authentic ramen, right in japan town! Really friendly service! Family owned, old school San Jose. Plastic straws optional.
Their basics (shio, tonkotsu) are great but I really like their Tan Tan (spicy). I order mine with a Calpis. -

I stopped by nine minutes before closing, hesitating to order because of the time, but the owner was very welcoming and made a point to let us know that we could take our time. I was very grateful -- my husband was hangry and craving ramen, and usually when I inquire about taking orders so close to closing time, the staff at the majority of restaurants roll their eyes and either briskly wave me away or grudgingly say yes. This response was completely the opposite!
I ordered the tonkotsu (not tonkatsu--my Japanese husband is adamant that I spell it correctly) shoyu ramen and absolutely loved the broth. It was supremely rich and hit the spot for both of us after an evening of Bon Odori dance practice. Thank you so much, Kumako! -

After grabbing $50 of manju from Shueidos next door (I'm a big fan), we stood in line for Kumakos where the line was out the door. Nevertheless we were among the first to be seated when the place opened at 5:30pm. This is a tell tale sign of a good establishment. The interior is rather spartan, small and unremarkable with about 4-5 tables and a bar. Our host was super friendly and fast. We had a nice curry Tan Tan Raman with an egg added. Was delish. Thanks Kumamoto!

The Service at Kumako was phenomenal. The atmosphere of the restaurant was relaxed and welcoming. The food was presented nicely and it was brought out quickly. One of the unique aspects of this restaurant was their flavored beer. I had the white peach flavored beer and it was probably one of the most delicious beers I've ever had. The curried Ramen had multiple meats that were cooked to perfection. The egg in the Tonkatsu Ramen was an excellent soft boil that melted in my mouth. Overall, this is a place I would definitely come back to whenever I am in Japantown in San Jose.

It was my first time at this place and I think that the ramen is awesome. I highly recommend for a taste of Japan.
